Visiting Amsterdam with a Dog: Your Complete Guide
Amsterdam is a wonderfully dog-friendly city. Your dog is welcome throughout the entire city centre, as well as in many shops and restaurants. The city also offers some lovely walking routes where your dog can run, swim, and meet other dogs.
Shopping in Amsterdam
Many visitors are unsure what to do with their dog in Amsterdam. Shopping is always an option. Be sure to visit pet shops like Pets Place or LittleDot. Pick up a treat or a toy for your beloved companion.
Visiting a museum
Most museums do not allow dogs, with the exception of assistance dogs. This applies to the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, among others. If in doubt, contact the museum beforehand.
Bringing your dog on a canal cruise
A canal cruise through Amsterdam's waterways is an absolute must. Most cruise companies do not allow dogs on board, except for assistance dogs. At Floating Amsterdam, we try to be flexible with dogs. Whether your dog can join depends on the cruise and conditions. Dogs must always be kept on a lead.
Dog parks and off-leash areas
Let your dog run and play freely. Amsterdam has a surprising number of designated off-leash areas. The dog park at Johan Braakensiehof and the dog field at Buiksloterweg are great options. Other areas where dogs can run free include the Oude Kerkerplas and Hoge Dijk recreation areas.
Even though dogs may run off-leash in many areas, please always clean up after your dog and carry a lead.
Albert Cuyp Market
Feel free to bring your dog to the Albert Cuyp Market. With 200 stalls open daily, it is one of Amsterdam's most popular markets for both tourists and locals. You will find clothes, fresh vegetables, exotic fruits, and perhaps a treat for your pet.
Waterlooplein Flea Market
The oldest flea market in the Netherlands is located at Waterlooplein, open six days a week. Besides the many stalls, you will find food trucks for a quick bite. Dogs are welcome. Entry is free.
